Consumer Evaluations

A small background to give you perspective on the critique. I am an advanced amateur shooting for about 10 years. I also personal a Canon 5D Mark II with some L Zoom lenses (24-70 F2.8 and the 70-200 F2.8) and the fairly decent 50mm 1.8 prime and a Fuji X100.
I spent a lot of time (quite possibly over 40 hours) researching this camera, reading evaluations and so on. prior to getting it on Amazon from a third party seller. I've had it about a week now and shooting with with the Sony 18-200 Zoom Lens (SEL18200). Below are my observations:
Very good:
1. Pretty small camera physique, smaller than my X100 and feels a lot like my old S90 compact in terms of size (this is of course without having the lens). With the 18-200 lens its no longer pocketable but nonetheless little and fairly manageable compared to a SLR.
2. Terrific build top quality, tough physique, I like the styling and I appreciate the handgrip. Just the correct size.
3. Likely the fastest shutter I have ever put to use, rather little shutter lag.
four. Simple and easy to use menus/interface and so on. Lots of options and points like sweep panorama and other "gadget" type factors function well despite the fact that unlikely that I will use them substantially.
5. Really good battery life. I am conveniently receiving the 400 or so shots per charge its rated for.
6. Electronic viewfinder - The fantastic element is that it works seriously well, focus is quickly even in low light, for the not so really good component relating to the viewfinder see beneath.
Not so very good
1. The electronic viewfinder that gets rave reviews is simply not as beneficial to my eyes as hunting via glass. Its a far cry from an optical viewfinder and I obtain the small "noise/dots" in low light distracting. Pictures even when blown up do not seem to show the similar noise so this is unquestionably a viewfinder problem. To give you context even with a lens cap on when the LCD is entirely black the viewfinder has tiny dots dancing on it sort of like static on a Television screen, this doesn't go away.
two. Internal Flash design wants work. When employed with the SEL18200 lens there is noticeable shadow in images due to the lens blocking some of the light, to the point where I am at present not implementing the flash at all and will sooner or later invest in an external or wireless flash. Just simply delivering the capacity to bounce this off the ceiling would have helped. UPDATE: Somebody in comments just pointed out and I verified that you can manually tilt the flash though shooting. Solves my problem with the SEL18200, thanks.
In the end what I definitely care about although is image quality. In this the camera does not disappoint. It does indoors just about as nicely as my Fuji X100 which to me is the most beneficial low light, auto WB adjustment beneath any type of light shooter I have ever applied and for landscapes and nature its nearly as really good as my 5D especially in fantastic light. I suspect with a much better lens I would be tough pressed to see the distinction, suitable now while the 18-200 f3.five is particularly versatile my Canon glass is most certainly a small sharper, but at its size and lightweight appeal by guess is that the Sony will get a lot more at bats than the Canon. Even when blown up to the size of a modern day day LCD Television photographs appear good and the zoom lens is terrific at bringing far away particulars closer. The 24MP señsor does capture a lot of detail and does properly in low light scenarios as nicely. I'm not seriously a high ISO shooter preferring flash or more quickly lenses exactly where this becomes needed but up to ISO 1600 have not observed any problems with the image quality even on a 63" screen.
All in all I am pretty happy with my buy and look forward to several years of shooting with it. I'd advise it along with the SEL-18200 lens for any person looking for a second camera as a go anywhere option to a SLR and lenses or as a particularly significant upgrade from a compact. This could also particularly very easily turn into the only camera for an enthusiast/advanced amateur sort who would be willing to trade in the bulky DSLR. I surely hope they make alot more high quality lenses for it as time goes by. I was also hunting at the 24mm F1.8 Carl Zeiss prime (36mm equivalent) but in the end opted for the versatility of the zoom especially considering the fact that my X100 gives me a devoted 35mm point of view for about the very same price but with camera body attached.
Update - I did some additional comparisons to my X100 and liked the Nex 7 enough to sell the Fuji. I used the proceeds to acquire the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 24mm F1.8 e mount lens. I'm acquiring this lens to mitigate some of my viewfinder matters due to the fact its vibrant adequate and the small dancing dots seem at bay but not completely gone. Also getting this lens to be of incredibly high top quality, auto-focus is really fast and indoor low light shooting a breeze. Portraits are sharp and background is pleasantly de-focused, even in dimly lit rooms I am not implementing flash or high ISOs and outdoors or in good light its wonderful.
Update 2 - I have now been making use of the Nex 7 for virtually 3 months. I have to say I appreciate it even more. Its become my go to camera for a lot of numerous occasions and I not too long ago travelled internationally with this and the Zeiss F1.8 lens as my only camera. Pictures of the trip came out beautiful, though I'm not much of a dedicated 35mm shooter I located that there was enough there to make me particularly pleased and in some instances crops etc. taking advantage of the ample resolution the Nex presents strengthened distinct pictures. I have also added the HVL20 flash to my collection and come across it to be beneficial in low light, indoor varieties of circumstances and quite compact still and lately added the Tamron 18-200 lens which I am liking a tiny even more than the Sony SEL18200 because its a small smaller, lighter and produces about the exact same image good quality. Vain I know but I in fact like the black of the Tamron lens extra.
I have been carrying out some tests also of portraits compared to my 5D Mark II and for me at least the Full Frame bokeh of the 5D can't be beat. I don't have a fantastic portrait lens for the Nex but so will reserve final judgement until I acquire 1 (50mm F1.eight on pre-order) but at close to identical focal lengths and apertures the Canon 5D images have the 3D like pop to them that the Nex is missing ONLY when compared side by side, i.e. the Nex does render a little much more detail in the background. Outside of this extreme bit of detective work that likely has fairly small worth in actual use I am very pleased with Nex for portraits and for all other people types of shooting which includes landscape with the Zeiss lens.

Update: I lately got hold of a Minolta 3600HS(D) flash for dirt cheap ($50 shipped) and it operates wonderfully with the NEX-7. Metering TTL is excellent and my indoor pictures appear amazing with bounce flash. Of course, it's a bit large and will add some weight to your camera, but well worth it.
An typical overview from an average Joe utilizing a not-so-common camera.
HARDWARE:
The create is sexy. It screams quality. Magnesium alloy body makes it heavier and larger than the earlier NEXes, as expected, but it really is a welcomed extra weight. I do not have tiny hands and often thought the NEX-5/5N, as good as the form is, felt a tiny bit like a toy. So I absolutely appreciate the NEX-7's new size and weight, a thing I can certainly wrap my fingers about.
I feel Sony have a quite wonderful layout, or at least one particular that honestly functions. I am sure you have heard all about the latest-and-greatest Electronic Viewfinder with its incredible high resolution, and the intuitive TriNavi three-dial manage. Yes, they work. I am a huge fan of the vibrant and sharp 3" tiltable LCD screen, but I've consistently wanted a good VF on my camera to better compose my shots and keep away from the nasty glare out in the sunlight. This is my very first time implementing an EVF, and it is a beneficial initially impression. The view is really large, giving lots of space to contain all the required info. There is a diopter for those with bad eyesight. The eyepiece is not precisely glass-friendly, and is really the 1 annoyance I have with the camera. I just can't seem to get it to comfy situated in my eye socket. But possibly I just have to get employed to a VF.
The TriNavi is also rather excellent (although i wish we can actually customize the wheels). I mainly shoot with Aperture-priority mode so one particular dial is for aperture and one particular is for Exposure Value compensation. This does function particularly properly, if you use a native E-mount lens. Then again, if you happen to be like me and shoot using legacy lenses, you are going to locate that the Aperture dial is basically useless. I'd really like to be able to customize the dials to my liking as an alternative of the given presets. It really is most certainly not a dilemma, but I just really feel that it's wasteful. Exact same with other manual modes.
Oh, hey, there's a built-in flash and a Sony/Minolta hot-shoe as well if you happen to be into that sort of factors )
IMAGE Quality:
24MP on an APS-C sensor is pretty impressive. It has been pitted against the 16MP sensor time and time again, and proven to be slightly, Particularly Fairly slightly, inferior at high ISO settings so I won't bore you with that. But what does it mean for us typical Joes? It means that you do not have to be concerned about anything. The 24MP sensor can hold its personal. Image high quality from ISO100-800 is pretty awesome. Noise at a minimal level and you can go appropriate ahead with those large prints. Noise level increases as you go past ISO 1600, but even up till ISO 3200, photos are nevertheless rather considerably usable. I shoot a lot of indoor shots without the need of flash and I like what I see. But of course, stick to lower ISO and/or use flash to get the preferred excellent.
24MP is also 6MP additional than the cheaper NEX models. Will those additional pixels make a difference? I say undoubtedly. a) Holy crop! So a lot headroom to spare, you can crop to your heart's content and nonetheless have a high-res result. b) Facts. The 24MP sensor can possibly (likely?) out-resolve any lens you have. I really feel (placebo?) like my shots have that extra POP it didn't with the NEX-five, using the same lens.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
The NEX method is young, and far from created. There is a lack of lenses (but an abundance in whining users...). Sony have done a decent job at covering all the focal ranges. We have the 16mm, 18-55mm, 30mm macro, 50mm, 55-210mm, 18-200mm (so good we get it TWICE!). However, we're still missing those speedy and good lenses. SOme people say we desire pancake primes. I say we just desire primes. What's the obsession with pancakes anyway? The only very good factor about them is the syrup.
Also, you can't use the built-in flash as a wireless flash commander. What's up with that Sony? The A77 can do it. Then again, you can tilt the built-in flash upwards to bounce the light. Fairly handy.
CONCLUSION:
Decide to buy this camera if you can afford it and discover it. It is a terrific performer in a modest body regardless of the minor flaws. I believe Sony have one more winner.

Consumer Evaluations

A tiny background to give you perspective on the evaluation. I'm an advanced amateur shooting for about ten years. I also personal a Canon 5D Mark II with some L Zoom lenses (24-70 F2.8 and the 70-200 F2.eight) and the extremely very good 50mm 1.eight prime and a Fuji X100.
I spent a lot of time (possibly over 40 hours) researching this camera, reading evaluations etc. ahead of purchasing it on Amazon from a third party seller. I've had it about a week now and shooting with with the Sony 18-200 Zoom Lens (SEL18200). Below are my observations:
Decent:
1. Quite small camera physique, smaller than my X100 and feels a lot like my old S90 compact in terms of size (this is of course without having the lens). With the 18-200 lens its no longer pocketable but still tiny and really manageable compared to a SLR.
two. Outstanding make top quality, tough physique, I like the styling and I really like the handgrip. Just the appropriate size.
three. Quite possibly the fastest shutter I have ever used, incredibly tiny shutter lag.
4. Hassle-free to use menus/interface and so on. Lots of solutions and things like sweep panorama and other "gadget" type items operate well although unlikely that I will use them much.
five. Very good battery life. I'm without difficulty receiving the 400 or so shots per charge its rated for.
6. Electronic viewfinder - The really good element is that it works definitely properly, focus is fast even in low light, for the not so superior portion relating to the viewfinder see below.
Not so good
1. The electronic viewfinder that gets rave reviews is basically not as good to my eyes as searching by means of glass. Its a far cry from an optical viewfinder and I get the small "noise/dots" in low light distracting. Pictures even when blown up don't seem to show the same noise so this is undoubtedly a viewfinder issue. To give you context even with a lens cap on when the LCD is absolutely black the viewfinder has tiny dots dancing on it sort of like static on a Tv screen, this does not go away.
two. Internal Flash style demands perform. When employed with the SEL18200 lens there is noticeable shadow in pictures due to the lens blocking some of the light, to the point exactly where I am at the moment not implementing the flash at all and will eventually invest in an external or wireless flash. Just basically delivering the ability to bounce this off the ceiling would have helped. UPDATE: An individual in comments just pointed out and I verified that you can manually tilt the flash although shooting. Solves my issue with the SEL18200, thanks.
In the finish what I honestly care about although is image quality. In this the camera does not disappoint. It does indoors just about as properly as my Fuji X100 which to me is the top low light, auto WB adjustment under any sort of light shooter I have ever implemented and for landscapes and nature its pretty much as superior as my 5D specifically in fine light. I suspect with a greater lens I would be tricky pressed to see the distinction, proper now even though the 18-200 f3.5 is pretty versatile my Canon glass is most certainly a small sharper, but at its size and lightweight appeal by guess is that the Sony will get a lot alot more at bats than the Canon. Even when blown up to the size of a contemporary day LCD Tv photos look amazing and the zoom lens is great at bringing far away specifics closer. The 24MP señsor does capture a lot of detail and does nicely in low light scenarios as properly. I am not genuinely a high ISO shooter preferring flash or faster lenses exactly where this becomes needed but up to ISO 1600 have not observed any issues with the image excellent even on a 63" screen.
All in all I am especially pleased with my purchase and appear forward to various years of shooting with it. I'd suggest it along with the SEL-18200 lens for anyone looking for a second camera as a go anyplace alternative to a SLR and lenses or as a rather important upgrade from a compact. This could also quite simply become the only camera for an enthusiast/advanced amateur sort who would be prepared to trade in the bulky DSLR. I unquestionably hope they make additional high top quality lenses for it as time goes by. I was also hunting at the 24mm F1.8 Carl Zeiss prime (36mm equivalent) but in the end opted for the versatility of the zoom specifically because my X100 gives me a dedicated 35mm point of view for about the identical price but with camera body attached.
Update - I did some more comparisons to my X100 and liked the Nex 7 enough to sell the Fuji. I implemented the proceeds to invest in the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 24mm F1.eight e mount lens. I'm locating this lens to mitigate some of my viewfinder troubles given that its bright adequate and the tiny dancing dots appear at bay but not totally gone. Also choosing this lens to be of fairly high top quality, auto-focus is very rapid and indoor low light shooting a breeze. Portraits are sharp and background is pleasantly de-focused, even in dimly lit rooms I am not making use of flash or high ISOs and outdoors or in fine light its amazing.
Update 2 - I have now been utilizing the Nex 7 for practically three months. I have to say I love it even extra. Its come to be my go to camera for a lot of different occasions and I recently travelled internationally with this and the Zeiss F1.eight lens as my only camera. Images of the trip came out lovely, despite the fact that I am not a lot of a devoted 35mm shooter I identified that there was sufficient there to make me quite happy and in some instances crops and so on. taking benefit of the ample resolution the Nex provides strengthened particular images. I have also added the HVL20 flash to my collection and locate it to be helpful in low light, indoor types of scenarios and fairly compact nonetheless and recently added the Tamron 18-200 lens which I am liking a small extra than the Sony SEL18200 due to the fact its a little smaller, lighter and produces about the similar image high quality. Vain I know but I actually like the black of the Tamron lens additional.
I have been doing some tests also of portraits compared to my 5D Mark II and for me at least the Full Frame bokeh of the 5D can not be beat. I don't have a amazing portrait lens for the Nex yet so will reserve final judgement till I acquire one (50mm F1.8 on pre-order) but at near identical focal lengths and apertures the Canon 5D pictures have the 3D like pop to them that the Nex is missing ONLY when compared side by side, i.e. the Nex does render a little extra detail in the background. Outside of this extreme bit of detective function that most likely has really little value in actual use I am extremely happy with Nex for portraits and for all other people types of shooting which includes landscape with the Zeiss lens.

Update: I lately got hold of a Minolta 3600HS(D) flash for dirt low-priced ($50 shipped) and it works wonderfully with the NEX-7. Metering TTL is ideal and my indoor pictures appear superb with bounce flash. Of course, it really is a bit large and will add some weight to your camera, but well worth it.
An common evaluation from an average Joe implementing a not-so-average camera.
HARDWARE:
The construct is attractive. It screams high quality. Magnesium alloy body tends to make it heavier and larger than the earlier NEXes, as expected, but it is a welcomed additional weight. I don't have small hands and generally believed the NEX-five/5N, as nice as the type is, felt a little bit like a toy. So I without a doubt appreciate the NEX-7's new size and weight, anything I can genuinely wrap my fingers around.
I feel Sony have a pretty excellent layout, or at least one particular that certainly works. I am confident you have heard all about the most current-and-greatest Electronic Viewfinder with its wonderful high resolution, and the intuitive TriNavi 3-dial control. Yes, they operate. I'm a significant fan of the bright and sharp 3" tiltable LCD screen, but I've at all times wanted a good VF on my camera to far better compose my shots and prevent the nasty glare out in the sunlight. This is my first time making use of an EVF, and it's a really good first impression. The view is quite significant, giving lots of area to contain all the required info. There is a diopter for those with undesirable eyesight. The eyepiece is not specifically glass-friendly, and is basically the a single annoyance I have with the camera. I just can not seem to get it to comfy situated in my eye socket. But possibly I just have to get implemented to a VF.
The TriNavi is also extremely fine (though i wish we can genuinely customize the wheels). I mainly shoot with Aperture-priority mode so a single dial is for aperture and a single is for Exposure Worth compensation. This does perform fairly nicely, if you use a native E-mount lens. Then again, if you happen to be like me and shoot implementing legacy lenses, you'll locate that the Aperture dial is generally useless. I'd love to be in a position to customize the dials to my liking instead of the offered presets. It is most certainly not a situation, but I just really feel that it really is wasteful. Very same with other manual modes.
Oh, hey, there's a built-in flash and a Sony/Minolta hot-shoe as nicely if you happen to be into that sort of factors )
IMAGE Quality:
24MP on an APS-C sensor is quite impressive. It has been pitted against the 16MP sensor time and time once again, and proven to be slightly, Pretty Very slightly, inferior at high ISO settings so I won't bore you with that. But what does it mean for us average Joes? It means that you do not have to be concerned about something. The 24MP sensor can hold its personal. Image excellent from ISO100-800 is quite awesome. Noise at a minimal level and you can go ideal ahead with those significant prints. Noise level increases as you go past ISO 1600, but even up till ISO 3200, pictures are nevertheless quite much usable. I shoot a lot of indoor shots without having flash and I like what I see. But of course, stick to lower ISO and/or use flash to get the preferred top quality.
24MP is also 6MP more than the cheaper NEX models. Will those added pixels make a difference? I say absolutely. a) Holy crop! So substantially headroom to spare, you can crop to your heart's content material and nevertheless have a high-res result. b) Specifics. The 24MP sensor can probably (quite possibly?) out-resolve any lens you have. I really feel (placebo?) like my shots have that additional POP it didn't with the NEX-5, implementing the very same lens.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
The NEX technique is young, and far from developed. There is a lack of lenses (but an abundance in whining users...). Sony have carried out a decent job at covering all the focal ranges. We have the 16mm, 18-55mm, 30mm macro, 50mm, 55-210mm, 18-200mm (so great we get it TWICE!). However, we're nevertheless missing those rapid and very good lenses. SOme many people say we desire pancake primes. I say we just want primes. What is the obsession with pancakes anyway? The only very good point about them is the syrup.
Also, you cannot use the built-in flash as a wireless flash commander. What is up with that Sony? The A77 can do it. In spite of this, you can tilt the built-in flash upwards to bounce the light. Rather hassle-free.
CONCLUSION:
Order this camera if you can afford it and get it. It is a great performer in a little body in spite of the minor flaws. I think Sony have one other winner.

Consumer Reviews

My new Sony Nex5N shipped with a lens cap getting no leash attachment. Realizing it is a necessary item, I ordered this ahead of I shed or misplace the original lens cap. I notice it functions nicely, but is just a bit shallower than the original so it is not rather as painless to use. It operates nicely anyway, just takes a lighter touch.

Buyer Evaluations

I'm knowledgeable with 35mm SLRs and Digital Point Shoot cameras, and I recently purchased this camera (Sony NEX-three with 18-55mm lens) for the reason that I have been disappointed with the good quality of photographs I can obtain with Digital Point Shooters. Getting been originally spoiled by my Nikkormat and Minolta 35mm cameras I found myself taking fewer and fewer images on my smaller Digital cameras simply for the reason that the photographs were just OK. So, with some critical life events coming in the next couple of years I decided to upgrade, yet I dreaded the thought of carrying around a bulky and heavy DSLR.
The NEX-3 has solved this problem for me: Excellent photos, remarkable indoor photos commonly with no flash needed, and substantially greater portability than a DSLR.
Before acquiring I read the reviews and noted some were in particular essential of the user interface Sony designed for the NEX series, so when I went to the store to attempt one I was expecting the worst. Instead, I found the NEX to have an extremely sophisticated and seductive interface, considerably improved than any of the Digital Point Shoot cameras I've had. I repeat, the interface is essentially seductive. Now, if you compare the interface to a DSLR you will promptly see that the controls are not continually visible and at-hand, they must be pulled up on the screen by way of the menu buttons. Subsequently, I do not advocate this as a "downgrade from DSLR" camera till you have tried a single in person. Even so, with my SLR knowledge I was pleased to see the animated representation of the P-A-S-M knob. And once "A" (aperture priority) is selected, for instance, the aperture adjustment is directly offered as portion of the viewfinder display. The interface is immediately recognizable to any one with DSLR/SLR experience.
The second thing that struck me although testing the camera at the store was how speedy it is. It powers up extremely fast, and the delay amongst shots is better than any digital point shoot I've noticed.
Based on these in-shop observations and the regularly strong critiques regarding picture excellent, I decided to invest in the NEX.
There are several cool and revolutionary capabilities on the NEX that I've not encountered prior to, and I will mention the two I believe most consumers will uncover beneficial.
- The panoramic photo feature will knock your socks off. The camera automatically captures a series of images though you pan from 1 side to the other (or up-down) and then stitches the images together into a single panoramic photo. This performs rather properly, and is pretty helpful for several outdoor scenes.
- The integration with Eye-Fi wireless SD memory cards tends to make for a fairly good automated transfer of your photographs to your laptop or computer and to web based sharing web pages. When I am shooting in my residence the photographs are uploaded suitable then, even though I am shooting. If I'm away from household then when I return I merely turn on the camera and the photos automatically upload and right after a minute of idle time the camera shuts off. If you decide to purchase a Sony NEX I strongly suggest you contemplate obtaining an Eye-Fi wireless SD card.
Upon acquiring the camera I left the subsequent day for a trip to Colorado for a wedding and to pay a visit to close friends and loved ones. Every person that saw the camera was enthralled with it. My daughters quickly took to it and snapped many superb photos working with it. My wife's reaction during the return trip: "That camera has currently paid for itself!"
Other facts:
- I'm receiving about 300 photographs on a battery charge, and will possibly invest in an additional battery within 6 months or so.
- The high resolution view screen is portion of the secret to liking the camera. You get instant satisfaction from seeing the good image high quality.
- The flash is workable but will not impress any individual with DSLR encounter. I hope Sony comes out with an improved version.
- If Sony introduces a typical lens (30mm) it will be tempting, due to the fact it might let the camera to be quickly carried in a coat pocket.
- I don't take a lot of videos, but the NEX-3 video is rather fine and will suffice for any objective I will ever have.
I extremely suggest this camera for a person upgrading from a Digital Point Shoot.

I just purchased this camera a week ago. I wanted to upgrade from a point and shoot and head into the DSLR globe. It's just a hobby for me. I am not a skilled and honestly don't know as well significantly about cameras. I had in my mind that I was going to go get a Nikon D5000. I had read lots of evaluations and that camera got pretty solid evaluations for a person who was new to the DSLR planet. I went into the store and did not like the really feel of the camera. I am 5'1 and have fairly smaller hands. I felt that the D5000 was bulky and heavy for me. I believed I would not want to carry some thing like that around. The store clerk showed me the Sony NEX-3 and explained what it was. He spoke quite highly of it and stated for someone like me it would be a awesome camera. I purchased it and have been playing about with it. I am not particular I am going to keep it. I truly liked applying the Macro setting on my point and shoot for taking photos of flowers to get just a tiny even more detail. The macro setting on this camera is not wonderful. My point and shoot does a improved job and there is not a macro lens out however for this camera to my understanding. I do not feel that I have really considerably control more than the camera when it really is in particular settings. The camera will disable particular capabilities when you are applying specific settings. Some thing as simple as wanting to shoot in black and white is disabled. My point and shoot can do that in any setting. I dont realize why I cant in this camera. I can't modify the concentrate location in most of the settings which I do not like. Thus the camera focuses on what it desires to whether than what you intended unless you are in PASM. I am not skilled however with working with the PASM settings but would like to understand and I am not sure this is the camera to learn on. The camera does not have a lot of buttons, it's all built into the LCD. It can take a couple of minutes to transform the settings and you have to push like 6 buttons to get to it so you can miss your shot if you want to transform a thing and need to do it rapidly. I will say that this camera does take amazing photographs and is definitively an upgrade in that respect from my point and shoot. It takes awesome pictures in low light. I haven't even used the screw on flash due to the fact I dont really feel like I have required it. The other con is the battery life. It really is awful. I rate it about a 3. If you are going to be out all day I would have a backup. They expense about $80. The manual says you can shoot about 300 photographs. That's not quite much. Overall, I do consider this camera shoots outstanding photos as a point and shoot but if you want extra control more than you will desire to get a DSLR. I assume I may perhaps return it. I will get employed to the really feel of it hopefully.
UPDATE:
I did finish up keeping the camera and there was an update that I downloaded from Sony and it fixed the battery life so it now does not drain as fast. I am incredibly pleased about that. The camera is in the shop for repair proper now. The LCD screen turned black at the top rated and cut off abuot 1/three of the picture. Sony is fixing it under the warranty that came with the camera. I dont know what caused this and have not observed any other evaluations exactly where this has occurred so may very well just have been my model. Now that I have been utilizing the camera for very some time, I am glad I purchased it and not a bulky DSLR. It is so light weight and I can carry it with me any where I go. It takes wonderful photos in nearly no light. I havent even had to use my flash. I cant wait to get it back from the repair shop. I have missed it.

Customer Critiques

I have been applying this lens with a preproduction loaner NEX-C3. Review on that camera to come soon...
This lens is in a lot of strategies a tour de force, showing that a excellent good quality lens and sensor package can be made little. Most casual shooter will probably head for the 18-55mm zoom, but this 16mm lens (crop aspect is 1.5, so it's a 24mm equivalent in 35mm land) would make a good carry lens for a sort of retro-rangefinder camera. This could get you all sorts of street shots with a especially pocketable camera, and enough resolution to crop to the image you certainly wanted. With the NEX-C3, low light levels weren't a challenge, and that would go nicely with this low profile lens and not implementing the flash.
Facts: 49mm filter thread

Just received this lens for Christmas and it appears to be a beneficial high quality item. I have not run any important tests on it or compared results with my 18-55mm zoom or my 18-200mm zoom. It is a nice compact size and weight, a good all about lens if you like wide angle shooting. This lens would be the equivalent of a 24mm on a 35mm camera.
While an f2.eight is not specifically quickly, it is fine on the NEX due to the fact the camera can deal with slow speed shots in other ways. For true wide angle shooters, Sony's Fish-Eye adapter will attach to this lens as nicely as the 18-55mm.

Consumer Evaluations

Men and women, I Enjoy this camera. I purchased it thinking there was an 85% likelihood I was going to return it, but am pleased to tell you that as soon as I uploaded my 1st images, I was smitten. I was most worried about image high quality, considering that I had previously owned a Sony a200 and a700, and ended up promoting each for a Canon and Nikon, considering that the picture top quality just wasn't up to snuff. My most current camera was a D300s and I would say that the nex5 performs just about as properly as it in most situations and even improved in a few. And the nex5 video blows the D300s out of the water! Clearly absolutely everyone has various demands and preferences from their camera so all I can do is tell you what my wants had been and why the nex5 is so wonderful for them.
The picture good quality was the most significant issue for me, which was even more than adequate so the next most fundamental criteria was the LCD. The LCD on my D300s was a total joke, as I couldn't see squat on that point in even moderate sunlight. This was particularly frustrating but given that it was based on an OVF anyway, I just dealt with it. But I started my photography in this digital age on a Canon S2IS which had a swivelling screen and full-time reside-view, and honestly, I've missed that method of taking images ever considering the fact that I moved up to dSLR's. The two items that I wanted most out of the LCD on the nex5 were adequate visibility in brilliant sunlight, and actual-time exposure compensation, so that you know Exactly what your picture would appear like before you take it. It passed both of these tests with flying colors. The second day I had it, my wife and I went fishing on the river, in the afternoon sun. Reside view photography would have been impossible on my D300s but I had no problems with the nex5. Recognize that it will get a small washed out, but I was still in a position to compose as nicely as I required and set exposure almost spot on. When I got dwelling and uploaded my pics, this was confirmed for me as they just looked impressive. The preferred element about it was recognizing that I would not have gotten any of those shots with my D300s, simply mainly because I would not have brought the dang issue considering that I already had a bunch of stuff to carry. The sony just fit in my pocket (cargo pocket, with 18-55) and was out of the way till needed.
The other superb items about this tiny guy are the ISO overall performance, which is ridiculous (superior than D300s) and the high-speed continuous mode. Just to be straight on this, it will take 7, full-resolution pictures a second, but locks exposure and focus. If you want it to refocus and adjust exposure, the most effective it can do is about 2 1/two. Of course there is the panoramic mode (have not tried it), HDR mode (don't like it), and twilight mode (don't like it). Oh yeah, and I appreciate the detachable flash which is solid as a rock when attached, but considering the fact that I hardly ever do flash-photography, I enjoy to be able to get it out of the way for the majority of the time.
For me this is the most beneficial camera on the market appropriate now. I tested it against the Lumix G2 and believed the picture quality is noticeably better on the Sony (I do feel concentrate is more quickly on the G2 although - certainly a terrific camera too), not to mention the type factor is so significantly smaller! But, with all that stated, I completely plan on promoting it in the fall when the new batch of cameras come out considering that there are a few points that the nex5 doesn't have that I desperately want.
Initially of all, the menu sucks. There is no way about it - if you ever attempt to modify the settings, you are going to be frustrated by it. I could reside with that, but there are other points missing. As really good as the LCD is, I honestly want an EVF, even if I have to have a slightly larger body. I also honestly require just a couple of alot more buttons, namely: ISO, Focus lock, AE lock, but I do like the minimalist strategy, since I totally hate the millions of buttons that Canon and Nikon throw on their cameras. As I mentioned, the video is rather superior, and though it does have an exposure manage, so you can boost or lower the brightness by two stops at any time (type of neat), I require full manual control over video. The only other points that I do not definitely like are just nagging items that I could reside with, but I'm hoping will enhance in my next buy, they are: battery life, screen blackout, and shutter noise. Battery life goes truly quickly on this camera and spares are ridiculously priced at $70, but I can understand that it takes a lot of juice to run that screen, so I could reside with it. The screen does black out when you take images for what seems just a hair too long. It's not terrible, and for a $700 camera it's really particularly very good, but it is just some thing that would bother me in the extended run. The shutter is surprisingly loud. The initial day I got it I took a picture of my wife taking a nap on the couch and it truly woke her up! I am not saying it sounds like a freight train, but however, I really like taking incognito photographs in crowded areas and would surely have to be a small additional careful with this tiny guy.
So, all in all, this is my favored camera I've ever owned. I mention that I program on promoting it only considering that I know that the evolution will be to bring more and far more functions to this little sized, mirrorless style camera, otherwise I wouldn't. If I had to pick out between every camera out there perfect now, I'd pick this one every time. But I am keeping a keen eye out for the nex7 and gh2 that need to be coming out this fall, and guess that one particular of those cameras will be fairly significantly fantastic for me.
UPDATE
Now that they've started manufacturing adapters for the NEX, I got myself a Canon FD lens adapter which has honestly taken the camera to a complete new level. Recognize that you will only have manual focus with any adapter but Sony tends to make it pretty simple by dedicating the bottom button to MF Help which zooms in so you can make certain that your concentrate is sharp! Even even though some of the lenses dwarf the tiny small NEX, it still handles quite comfortably and effectively. If you appreciate this camera but are frustrated with the selection (or lack of) of lenses, check out the choices on ebay - those old lenses are a real bargain now.

I have had this camera now for 3 weeks and its seriously splendid overall.
Pros
- Rather compact and light - not rather the size of a compact camera but fairly close. With the 16mm lens you can readily slip it into a jacket pocket or carry it in a little case. But it feels fairly substantial and has awesome ergonomics. Carrying around a DSLR is such a discomfort when I am hiking or walking around a city but this is a piece of cake. It also hangs from your neck with the lens pointed down so you do not bump into points with it.
- Articulating screen lets you shoot from the hip (actually). Screen is also super high resolution and what you see on the screen is pretty considerably what you get with the image which is fantastic for a non SLR camera.
- Amazing photographs - outstanding colors, exceptional quality, 14m pixels really produces clear images. Amazing depth of field. The exact same sensor as located in a a lot larger DSLR. Hardly ever need to have to use the flash mainly because the sensor is so good.
- RAW assistance as properly as JPEG
- 1080 videos are fabulous and sounds high quality is particularly really good
- All of the controls are just a few clicks away on the interface to modify the ISO, aperture, and so on.
- Some honestly neat capabilities such as HDR (takes three photos with varying settings automatically to create images with even more contrast and shadows), automatically takes a image when somebody smiles (honestly!), panoramic images with ease (while takes some practice)
Cons
- Battery life is lousy. I may very well have a negative battery and I known as Sony and they are sending me a new a single for totally free.
- RAW files at the moment cant be viewed by iPhoto, Photoshop, etc. but you can view them working with Sony's computer software. This must modify in the near future.
- Restricted lens selection appropriate now - once again this must transform
- Most of the software program that comes with the camera is Computer-only (which includes firmware updates!) and not readily available for the Mac (but the key applications that do come with it are mac compatible)
All in all, I am extremely glad I made this obtain. I wanted a new DSLR but was tired of carrying around such a heavy piece of gear. This is almost certainly a great second camera for specialist photographers but for absolutely everyone else its just a really superb camera. Its ideal for persons that want far better good quality than they can get from a compact but do not want all of the downsides of a DSLR.
