Buyer Evaluations
I'm knowledgeable with 35mm SLRs and Digital Point Shoot cameras, and I recently purchased this camera (Sony NEX-three with 18-55mm lens) for the reason that I have been disappointed with the good quality of photographs I can obtain with Digital Point Shooters. Getting been originally spoiled by my Nikkormat and Minolta 35mm cameras I found myself taking fewer and fewer images on my smaller Digital cameras simply for the reason that the photographs were just OK. So, with some critical life events coming in the next couple of years I decided to upgrade, yet I dreaded the thought of carrying around a bulky and heavy DSLR.
The NEX-3 has solved this problem for me: Excellent photos, remarkable indoor photos commonly with no flash needed, and substantially greater portability than a DSLR.
Before acquiring I read the reviews and noted some were in particular essential of the user interface Sony designed for the NEX series, so when I went to the store to attempt one I was expecting the worst. Instead, I found the NEX to have an extremely sophisticated and seductive interface, considerably improved than any of the Digital Point Shoot cameras I've had. I repeat, the interface is essentially seductive. Now, if you compare the interface to a DSLR you will promptly see that the controls are not continually visible and at-hand, they must be pulled up on the screen by way of the menu buttons. Subsequently, I do not advocate this as a "downgrade from DSLR" camera till you have tried a single in person. Even so, with my SLR knowledge I was pleased to see the animated representation of the P-A-S-M knob. And once "A" (aperture priority) is selected, for instance, the aperture adjustment is directly offered as portion of the viewfinder display. The interface is immediately recognizable to any one with DSLR/SLR experience.
The second thing that struck me although testing the camera at the store was how speedy it is. It powers up extremely fast, and the delay amongst shots is better than any digital point shoot I've noticed.
Based on these in-shop observations and the regularly strong critiques regarding picture excellent, I decided to invest in the NEX.
There are several cool and revolutionary capabilities on the NEX that I've not encountered prior to, and I will mention the two I believe most consumers will uncover beneficial.
- The panoramic photo feature will knock your socks off. The camera automatically captures a series of images though you pan from 1 side to the other (or up-down) and then stitches the images together into a single panoramic photo. This performs rather properly, and is pretty helpful for several outdoor scenes.
- The integration with Eye-Fi wireless SD memory cards tends to make for a fairly good automated transfer of your photographs to your laptop or computer and to web based sharing web pages. When I am shooting in my residence the photographs are uploaded suitable then, even though I am shooting. If I'm away from household then when I return I merely turn on the camera and the photos automatically upload and right after a minute of idle time the camera shuts off. If you decide to purchase a Sony NEX I strongly suggest you contemplate obtaining an Eye-Fi wireless SD card.
Upon acquiring the camera I left the subsequent day for a trip to Colorado for a wedding and to pay a visit to close friends and loved ones. Every person that saw the camera was enthralled with it. My daughters quickly took to it and snapped many superb photos working with it. My wife's reaction during the return trip: "That camera has currently paid for itself!"
Other facts:
- I'm receiving about 300 photographs on a battery charge, and will possibly invest in an additional battery within 6 months or so.
- The high resolution view screen is portion of the secret to liking the camera. You get instant satisfaction from seeing the good image high quality.
- The flash is workable but will not impress any individual with DSLR encounter. I hope Sony comes out with an improved version.
- If Sony introduces a typical lens (30mm) it will be tempting, due to the fact it might let the camera to be quickly carried in a coat pocket.
- I don't take a lot of videos, but the NEX-3 video is rather fine and will suffice for any objective I will ever have.
I extremely suggest this camera for a person upgrading from a Digital Point Shoot.
I just purchased this camera a week ago. I wanted to upgrade from a point and shoot and head into the DSLR globe. It's just a hobby for me. I am not a skilled and honestly don't know as well significantly about cameras. I had in my mind that I was going to go get a Nikon D5000. I had read lots of evaluations and that camera got pretty solid evaluations for a person who was new to the DSLR planet. I went into the store and did not like the really feel of the camera. I am 5'1 and have fairly smaller hands. I felt that the D5000 was bulky and heavy for me. I believed I would not want to carry some thing like that around. The store clerk showed me the Sony NEX-3 and explained what it was. He spoke quite highly of it and stated for someone like me it would be a awesome camera. I purchased it and have been playing about with it. I am not particular I am going to keep it. I truly liked applying the Macro setting on my point and shoot for taking photos of flowers to get just a tiny even more detail. The macro setting on this camera is not wonderful. My point and shoot does a improved job and there is not a macro lens out however for this camera to my understanding. I do not feel that I have really considerably control more than the camera when it really is in particular settings. The camera will disable particular capabilities when you are applying specific settings. Some thing as simple as wanting to shoot in black and white is disabled. My point and shoot can do that in any setting. I dont realize why I cant in this camera. I can't modify the concentrate location in most of the settings which I do not like. Thus the camera focuses on what it desires to whether than what you intended unless you are in PASM. I am not skilled however with working with the PASM settings but would like to understand and I am not sure this is the camera to learn on. The camera does not have a lot of buttons, it's all built into the LCD. It can take a couple of minutes to transform the settings and you have to push like 6 buttons to get to it so you can miss your shot if you want to transform a thing and need to do it rapidly. I will say that this camera does take amazing photographs and is definitively an upgrade in that respect from my point and shoot. It takes awesome pictures in low light. I haven't even used the screw on flash due to the fact I dont really feel like I have required it. The other con is the battery life. It really is awful. I rate it about a 3. If you are going to be out all day I would have a backup. They expense about $80. The manual says you can shoot about 300 photographs. That's not quite much. Overall, I do consider this camera shoots outstanding photos as a point and shoot but if you want extra control more than you will desire to get a DSLR. I assume I may perhaps return it. I will get employed to the really feel of it hopefully.
UPDATE:
I did finish up keeping the camera and there was an update that I downloaded from Sony and it fixed the battery life so it now does not drain as fast. I am incredibly pleased about that. The camera is in the shop for repair proper now. The LCD screen turned black at the top rated and cut off abuot 1/three of the picture. Sony is fixing it under the warranty that came with the camera. I dont know what caused this and have not observed any other evaluations exactly where this has occurred so may very well just have been my model. Now that I have been utilizing the camera for very some time, I am glad I purchased it and not a bulky DSLR. It is so light weight and I can carry it with me any where I go. It takes wonderful photos in nearly no light. I havent even had to use my flash. I cant wait to get it back from the repair shop. I have missed it.
