Client Critiques

1st and foremost, you must be aware that you will will need an additional lens aside from the 18-200mm, to take flash pictures. The 18-200 lens barrel obstructs the lower part of the flash output at anything less than ~50mm. Sony made a large mistake here in not supplying a 'flash extender' with the lens and at this time of writing, it is not accessible for purchase either. Moreover, it would have nice if Sony included a lens pouch or carrying case for the lens while it awaits its use. However, some thing else you are going to require to obtain if you want to keep the lens in it is pristine situation. BTW, the NEX/18-200mm combo doesn't sit flat on the table either the bottoms are not even.
Then we have the lens size and the integration with the NEX body. Suffice to say, it is reminiscent of the older Sony 707/717 models where a considerably larger lens is coupled a smaller physique. Difference is that with the NEX, the body doesn't twist/tilt like the 7x7 models but only the LCD tilts, which aids with stability. It really is a massive lens if you are comparing it to the compact superzooms but it's not given the size of the NEX sensor. It is comparable to the 18-200 of the DSLRs and the 14-140 zoom lenses of the m4/3s. The dichotomy is that for the people who purchased into the NEX for its dimunitive size are now faced with less than compact setup.
On very first use, the NEX/18-200 combo appears like a joke. Clearly, this is a one-handed operation for a very short time only the NEX body itself don't have considerably of a grip and the front heavy lens is going to tip the balance. This is worsened in its fully exended zoom length. To zoom, you will need to have to use your left hand to hold the bottom of the lens barrel though using its two finger tips and hints to rotate the zoom ring. Likewise to manual focus.
Nonetheless, the excellent of this lens is just plainly superb. The distant test scenes from backyard I ordinarily take with new lenses and cameras were outstanding and possibly one of the preferred I've ever had. The stabilization system works especially well and I have no problems handholding the combo and finding clear images. The lens stops down to f6.three at the max zoom length but this is compensated with the NEX's low-noise high-ISO.
I have also not heard it focusing either. In the handful of 1080 videos I've created, I have not heard any concentrate noise which can be exceptionally distracting during viewing. The 18-200 makes for an outstanding video lens as nicely.
The make quality of this lens is also outstanding. The zoom ring is firm but rotates smoothly and likewise with the concentrate ring. I thought this Sony lens is superior built than the equivalent 14-140 Panny lens which has absolutely free play in its lens mount and a inconsistent zoom motion. I have not even used the zoom lock switch when as I have not seasoned any zoom creep but even though carrying the lens.
Overall, an outstanding lens.

The Sony SEL18200 lens was a bit difficult to get hold of, but properly worth the wait and cost. I've had quite a few high-priced lenses more than the years but this one, coupled with the Nex-five engineering, is the most versatile, functional and precise I've owned. Bulky, but worth just about every ounce, considering that of the range of situations in which this lenses produces wonderful photos - and with ease of use. For walking situations, the smaller Nex-5 lenses are improved, but for any scenario exactly where long schlepps are not involved, this lens will cover nearly any amateur photo circumstance. What is exceptionally nice is to hang the camera on the neckstrap, tilt up the LCD and shoot with this lens, no tripod, but goood stability like the old film Mamiyas.
The a single negative is the lack of lighting options. The dinky Nex-five flash will not function with this lens. In zoom ranges, flash is not an issue. Nonetheless, you can use this unit, amazingly, in macro mode, and the potential to do some lighting - particularly, inventive illumination - would be amazing. Sony demands a hot shoe connector or a trigger for other lighting units. The camera is sophisticated adequate to support this. The Nex family members is evolving and points to pretty much specialist level use. This lens is evidence. Not there but, but meanwhile, we amateurs can improvise. This lens is worth it.
