Customer Reviews

Individuals, I Enjoy this camera. I bought it thinking there was an 85% likelihood I was going to return it, but am pleased to tell you that as soon as I uploaded my initial pictures, I was smitten. I was most worried about picture excellent, given that I had previously owned a Sony a200 and a700, and ended up selling both for a Canon and Nikon, for the reason that the image quality just wasn't up to snuff. My most latest camera was a D300s and I would say that the nex5 performs almost as well as it in most scenarios and even superior in a couple of. And the nex5 video blows the D300s out of the water! Undoubtedly everyone has various requirements and preferences from their camera so all I can do is tell you what my needs were and why the nex5 is so amazing for them.
The image quality was the most vital thing for me, which was even more than adequate so the next most important criteria was the LCD. The LCD on my D300s was a full joke, as I couldn't see squat on that thing in even moderate sunlight. This was really frustrating but considering that it was based on an OVF anyway, I just dealt with it. But I started my photography in this digital age on a Canon S2IS which had a swivelling screen and complete-time reside-view, and honestly, I've missed that system of taking photos ever considering that I moved up to dSLR's. The two items that I wanted most out of the LCD on the nex5 had been sufficient visibility in vibrant sunlight, and real-time exposure compensation, so that you know Exactly what your picture would appear like prior to you take it. It passed both of these tests with flying colors. The second day I had it, my wife and I went fishing on the river, in the afternoon sun. Live view photography would have been impossible on my D300s but I had no troubles with the nex5. Recognize that it will get a little washed out, but I was nonetheless able to compose as properly as I required and set exposure almost spot on. When I got house and uploaded my pics, this was confirmed for me as they just looked wonderful. The most beneficial element about it was knowing that I would not have gotten any of those shots with my D300s, simply simply because I wouldn't have brought the dang thing because I already had a bunch of stuff to carry. The sony just fit in my pocket (cargo pocket, with 18-55) and was out of the way until necessary.
The other good things about this little guy are the ISO efficiency, which is ridiculous (superior than D300s) and the high-speed continuous mode. Just to be straight on this, it will take 7, full-resolution photos a second, but locks exposure and focus. If you want it to refocus and adjust exposure, the most beneficial it can do is about two 1/2. Of course there is the panoramic mode (have not attempted it), HDR mode (don't like it), and twilight mode (don't like it). Oh yeah, and I love the detachable flash which is solid as a rock when attached, but since I hardly ever do flash-photography, I adore to be in a position to get it out of the way for the majority of the time.
For me this is the greatest camera on the marketplace suitable now. I tested it against the Lumix G2 and believed the image top quality is noticeably better on the Sony (I do consider focus is more rapidly on the G2 though - surely a terrific camera as well), not to mention the form factor is so a lot smaller! But, with all that mentioned, I completely plan on selling it in the fall when the new batch of cameras come out considering that there are a couple of things that the nex5 does not have that I desperately want.
1st of all, the menu sucks. There is no way about it - if you ever attempt to transform the settings, you are going to be frustrated by it. I could reside with that, but there are other things missing. As really good as the LCD is, I certainly want an EVF, even if I have to have a slightly bigger body. I also actually want just a handful of a lot more buttons, namely: ISO, Focus lock, AE lock, but I do like the minimalist approach, due to the fact I absolutely hate the millions of buttons that Canon and Nikon throw on their cameras. As I mentioned, the video is incredibly fantastic, and although it does have an exposure control, so you can boost or decrease the brightness by two stops at any time (sort of neat), I require full manual control more than video. The only other issues that I do not definitely like are just nagging points that I could live with, but I am hoping will boost in my next purchase, they are: battery life, screen blackout, and shutter noise. Battery life goes definitely quick on this camera and spares are ridiculously priced at $70, but I can fully grasp that it takes a lot of juice to run that screen, so I could reside with it. The screen does black out when you take photographs for what appears just a hair also long. It's not terrible, and for a $700 camera it is essentially especially fantastic, but it is just one thing that would bother me in the lengthy run. The shutter is surprisingly loud. The first day I got it I took a image of my wife taking a nap on the couch and it actually woke her up! I am not saying it sounds like a freight train, but unfortunately, I like taking incognito photographs in crowded locations and would certainly have to be a small a lot more cautious with this small guy.
So, all in all, this is my favored camera I've ever owned. I mention that I program on promoting it only because I know that the evolution will be to bring far more and additional functions to this little sized, mirrorless style camera, otherwise I would not. If I had to pick in between each camera out there appropriate now, I'd pick out this one each time. But I am keeping a keen eye out for the nex7 and gh2 that should really be coming out this fall, and guess that a single of those cameras will be fairly much best for me.
UPDATE
Now that they've started manufacturing adapters for the NEX, I got myself a Canon FD lens adapter which has certainly taken the camera to a entire new level. Realize that you will only have manual concentrate with any adapter but Sony tends to make it quite hassle-free by dedicating the bottom button to MF Help which zooms in so you can make positive that your concentrate is sharp! Even though some of the lenses dwarf the tiny small NEX, it nonetheless handles fairly comfortably and efficiently. If you like this camera but are frustrated with the selection (or lack of) of lenses, check out the solutions on ebay - those old lenses are a actual bargain now.

I have had this camera now for three weeks and its definitely amazing general.
Pros
- Very compact and light - not fairly the size of a compact camera but fairly close. With the 16mm lens you can simply slip it into a jacket pocket or carry it in a small case. But it feels incredibly substantial and has superb ergonomics. Carrying about a DSLR is such a discomfort when I am hiking or walking around a city but this is a piece of cake. It also hangs from your neck with the lens pointed down so you do not bump into points with it.
- Articulating screen lets you shoot from the hip (literally). Screen is also super high resolution and what you see on the screen is quite a lot what you get with the image which is stunning for a non SLR camera.
- Brilliant photographs - amazing colors, good top quality, 14m pixels actually produces clear photographs. Superb depth of field. The exact same sensor as identified in a considerably bigger DSLR. Seldom will need to use the flash due to the fact the sensor is so very good.
- RAW help as well as JPEG
- 1080 videos are spectacular and sounds high quality is very fine
- All of the controls are just a few clicks away on the interface to transform the ISO, aperture, and so on.
- Some genuinely neat functions such as HDR (takes three pictures with varying settings automatically to create pictures with alot more contrast and shadows), automatically takes a picture when somebody smiles (honestly!), panoramic photographs with ease (despite the fact that takes some practice)
Cons
- Battery life is lousy. I could possibly have a negative battery and I named Sony and they are sending me a new a single for absolutely free.
- RAW files at present cant be viewed by iPhoto, Photoshop, and so on. but you can view them implementing Sony's software. This will need to modify in the near future.
- Limited lens selection proper now - once more this ought to adjust
- Most of the computer software that comes with the camera is Computer-only (like firmware updates!) and not attainable for the Mac (but the key applications that do come with it are mac compatible)
All in all, I am very glad I produced this obtain. I wanted a new DSLR but was tired of carrying about such a heavy piece of equipment. This is almost certainly a wonderful second camera for qualified photographers but for everybody else its just a definitely fantastic camera. Its excellent for consumers that want greater top quality than they can get from a compact but don't want all of the downsides of a DSLR.
