Consumer Evaluations
Men and women, I Enjoy this camera. I purchased it thinking there was an 85% likelihood I was going to return it, but am pleased to tell you that as soon as I uploaded my 1st images, I was smitten. I was most worried about image high quality, considering that I had previously owned a Sony a200 and a700, and ended up promoting each for a Canon and Nikon, considering that the picture top quality just wasn't up to snuff. My most current camera was a D300s and I would say that the nex5 performs just about as properly as it in most situations and even improved in a few. And the nex5 video blows the D300s out of the water! Clearly absolutely everyone has various demands and preferences from their camera so all I can do is tell you what my wants had been and why the nex5 is so wonderful for them.
The picture good quality was the most significant issue for me, which was even more than adequate so the next most fundamental criteria was the LCD. The LCD on my D300s was a total joke, as I couldn't see squat on that point in even moderate sunlight. This was particularly frustrating but given that it was based on an OVF anyway, I just dealt with it. But I started my photography in this digital age on a Canon S2IS which had a swivelling screen and full-time reside-view, and honestly, I've missed that method of taking images ever considering the fact that I moved up to dSLR's. The two items that I wanted most out of the LCD on the nex5 were adequate visibility in brilliant sunlight, and actual-time exposure compensation, so that you know Exactly what your picture would appear like before you take it. It passed both of these tests with flying colors. The second day I had it, my wife and I went fishing on the river, in the afternoon sun. Reside view photography would have been impossible on my D300s but I had no problems with the nex5. Recognize that it will get a small washed out, but I was still in a position to compose as nicely as I required and set exposure almost spot on. When I got dwelling and uploaded my pics, this was confirmed for me as they just looked impressive. The preferred element about it was recognizing that I would not have gotten any of those shots with my D300s, simply mainly because I would not have brought the dang issue considering that I already had a bunch of stuff to carry. The sony just fit in my pocket (cargo pocket, with 18-55) and was out of the way till needed.
The other superb items about this tiny guy are the ISO overall performance, which is ridiculous (superior than D300s) and the high-speed continuous mode. Just to be straight on this, it will take 7, full-resolution pictures a second, but locks exposure and focus. If you want it to refocus and adjust exposure, the most effective it can do is about 2 1/two. Of course there is the panoramic mode (have not tried it), HDR mode (don't like it), and twilight mode (don't like it). Oh yeah, and I appreciate the detachable flash which is solid as a rock when attached, but considering the fact that I hardly ever do flash-photography, I enjoy to be able to get it out of the way for the majority of the time.
For me this is the most beneficial camera on the market appropriate now. I tested it against the Lumix G2 and believed the picture quality is noticeably better on the Sony (I do feel concentrate is more quickly on the G2 although - certainly a terrific camera too), not to mention the type factor is so significantly smaller! But, with all that stated, I completely plan on promoting it in the fall when the new batch of cameras come out considering that there are a few points that the nex5 doesn't have that I desperately want.
Initially of all, the menu sucks. There is no way about it - if you ever attempt to modify the settings, you are going to be frustrated by it. I could reside with that, but there are other points missing. As really good as the LCD is, I honestly want an EVF, even if I have to have a slightly larger body. I also honestly require just a couple of alot more buttons, namely: ISO, Focus lock, AE lock, but I do like the minimalist strategy, since I totally hate the millions of buttons that Canon and Nikon throw on their cameras. As I mentioned, the video is rather superior, and though it does have an exposure manage, so you can boost or lower the brightness by two stops at any time (type of neat), I require full manual control over video. The only other points that I do not definitely like are just nagging items that I could reside with, but I'm hoping will enhance in my next buy, they are: battery life, screen blackout, and shutter noise. Battery life goes truly quickly on this camera and spares are ridiculously priced at $70, but I can understand that it takes a lot of juice to run that screen, so I could reside with it. The screen does black out when you take images for what seems just a hair too long. It's not terrible, and for a $700 camera it's really particularly very good, but it is just some thing that would bother me in the extended run. The shutter is surprisingly loud. The initial day I got it I took a picture of my wife taking a nap on the couch and it truly woke her up! I am not saying it sounds like a freight train, but however, I really like taking incognito photographs in crowded areas and would surely have to be a small additional careful with this tiny guy.
So, all in all, this is my favored camera I've ever owned. I mention that I program on promoting it only considering that I know that the evolution will be to bring more and far more functions to this little sized, mirrorless style camera, otherwise I wouldn't. If I had to pick out between every camera out there perfect now, I'd pick this one every time. But I am keeping a keen eye out for the nex7 and gh2 that need to be coming out this fall, and guess that one particular of those cameras will be fairly significantly fantastic for me.
UPDATE
Now that they've started manufacturing adapters for the NEX, I got myself a Canon FD lens adapter which has honestly taken the camera to a complete new level. Recognize that you will only have manual focus with any adapter but Sony tends to make it pretty simple by dedicating the bottom button to MF Help which zooms in so you can make certain that your concentrate is sharp! Even even though some of the lenses dwarf the tiny small NEX, it still handles quite comfortably and effectively. If you appreciate this camera but are frustrated with the selection (or lack of) of lenses, check out the choices on ebay - those old lenses are a real bargain now.
I have had this camera now for 3 weeks and its seriously splendid overall.
Pros
- Rather compact and light - not rather the size of a compact camera but fairly close. With the 16mm lens you can readily slip it into a jacket pocket or carry it in a little case. But it feels fairly substantial and has awesome ergonomics. Carrying around a DSLR is such a discomfort when I am hiking or walking around a city but this is a piece of cake. It also hangs from your neck with the lens pointed down so you do not bump into points with it.
- Articulating screen lets you shoot from the hip (actually). Screen is also super high resolution and what you see on the screen is pretty considerably what you get with the image which is fantastic for a non SLR camera.
- Amazing photographs - outstanding colors, exceptional quality, 14m pixels really produces clear images. Amazing depth of field. The exact same sensor as located in a a lot larger DSLR. Hardly ever need to have to use the flash mainly because the sensor is so good.
- RAW assistance as properly as JPEG
- 1080 videos are fabulous and sounds high quality is particularly really good
- All of the controls are just a few clicks away on the interface to modify the ISO, aperture, and so on.
- Some honestly neat capabilities such as HDR (takes three photos with varying settings automatically to create images with even more contrast and shadows), automatically takes a image when somebody smiles (honestly!), panoramic images with ease (while takes some practice)
Cons
- Battery life is lousy. I may very well have a negative battery and I known as Sony and they are sending me a new a single for totally free.
- RAW files at the moment cant be viewed by iPhoto, Photoshop, etc. but you can view them working with Sony's computer software. This must modify in the near future.
- Restricted lens selection appropriate now - once again this must transform
- Most of the software program that comes with the camera is Computer-only (which includes firmware updates!) and not readily available for the Mac (but the key applications that do come with it are mac compatible)
All in all, I am extremely glad I made this obtain. I wanted a new DSLR but was tired of carrying around such a heavy piece of gear. This is almost certainly a great second camera for specialist photographers but for absolutely everyone else its just a really superb camera. Its ideal for persons that want far better good quality than they can get from a compact but do not want all of the downsides of a DSLR.
